Easy to grill up, tuck in a warm roll, and enjoy without the need for a plate, sausage is a staple offering at an outdoor cookout.
To celebrate the noble sausage in its many forms, there’s South Philly SausageFest, an annual autumn block party that unites the Newbold and West Passyunk neighborhoods over a love of sausage, beer, and giving back.
So, ready your bib, ketchup packets, and appetite! Here are five reasons to attend the South Philly SausageFest taking place Saturday, September 30th from noon to 8:00 p.m.!
1. Explore South Philly
Whether you live in South Philly or a different part of the city, the South Philly SausageFest is a perfect opportunity to check out West Passyunk Avenue from South Broad Street to 15th Street, traffic-free!
2. Sample Sausage from Many Lands
At this fun fall festival, 10 diverse South Philly restaurants step up to the plate to deliver their best sausage gumbos, sausage sandwiches, sausage-studded pasta dishes, biscuits and sausage gravy—like a linked sausage, the list goes on and on!
3. Sip Local Craft Brews
Plus, 10 South Philly restaurants and 10 local craft breweries? The fare at this festival can’t be beat. Palm a cold one with your savory sausage feast—maybe you’ll find a Philly brewery that’ll become your new favorite.
4. Rock Out to Live Music
What better accompaniment to these outdoor festivities than live tunes to soundtrack your sausage sampling? Do the sausage shuffle, chorizo samba, or bratwurst waltz while eight live music shows unfold throughout the day.
5. Give Back to the South Philly Community
The proceeds of the South Philly SausageFest help revitalization efforts in the greater Newbold community. Last year, proceeds supported the area’s street cleaning program, providing employment for 10 disabled Philadelphia residents and benefited up-and-coming small businesses in the area just getting off the ground.
Make Plans to Attend SausageFest 2017

Our recommendation? Break out your bicycle for two and enjoy the cool fall weather on festival day, followed by dynamite food. The Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia created a map of the SausageFest festivities that cyclists can use to get around the festival route—also accessible on the event website. Enjoy!
