Explore a Career as a Marine Mechanic

Marine Mechanic SchoolEach day, marine mechanics work to repair inboard and outboard engines on vessels of various sizes. You’ll learn all about how these engines run and what needs to be done to repair them, but you’ll also learn all about the support systems and sub-systems in each watercraft. This includes electrical, plumbing, air conditioning, and heating.

Routine maintenance will be a large bulk of your daily work; however, there may be extensive mechanical repairs, like repairing fiberglass and gelcoats, which require a steady hand and some time.

At our Warminster facility, you’ll have the opportunity to work on the boats you’ll see in the real world. Learning from our experienced instructors, you’ll gain the knowledge required to make informed decisions about repairs and maintenance.

Get Credit as You Prepare for the Future

If you’re enrolled here at ATC, you may be thinking about your future career already. All marine students who graduate and obtain employment with a Mercury/MerCruiser dealership can acquire credit for the Mercury Marine Technician Fundamentals Course (MTF). If you want to acquire Mercury technician certification, you will need this basic requirement taken care of.

Students will also have access to the Yamaha Marine University, an online training course that’s specific to Yamaha’s “Introduction to Outboard Systems.” You can take the credit earned from these completed training courses and then transfer them to a Yamaha dealer.

Pursue a Career in the Marine Industry

Training on inboard, outboard, and sterndrive engines will prepare you for a career as a marine mechanic. Our hands-on program will see you spend plenty of time in the shop working on these engines with our experienced instructors guiding you along the way. Of course, you’ll still hit the books during classroom time, too.

Many of the leading brands in the industry today are looking for experts on specific engines. We are a training location for Mercury Marine and Yamaha Outboard.

Marine Service Technology Courses

Marine Mechanic SchoolDuring this program, you’ll focus on the top manufacturers in the marine industry. This list includes Mercury marine, Honda Marine, and Yamaha Marine, among others. You’ll learn all about seamanship basics and how to handle the day-to-day.

Courses taught as part of this program include:

After you’ve completed these courses and have graduated from the program, you may be prepared for a career as a:

Marine Electrical and Air Conditioning Systems

In this course, learn the basics of electricity and magnetism, becoming knowledgeable in basic electrical circuits, test equipment, wiring, and how to protect the ignition in a boat.

This course also covers batteries and chargers, along with starting and charging systems. Marine safety equipment will also be discussed, so you have a better idea of what needs to be done in case of emergency on the water.

This course also covers:

  • AC electrical basics
  • AC generators
  • Inverters
  • Circuit protection

Marine Mechanical Systems

Marine terminology is covered in this course, as you will become familiar with some of the key terms and facts that you need to know. When boaters are out on the water, there are various issues they could encounter. The basic seamanship and line handling will give you an idea of what these boaters may run into, with fuel system coursework preparing you for boat repair.

Basic fiberglass and cosmetic gelcoat repair, along with boat trailer maintenance, will also be covered.
