What Does a Hi-Performance Vehicle Mechanic Do?

What Does A High-Performance Vehicle Mechanic Do

It’s all about the need for speed. Hi-performance vehicle mechanics must be able to work in a thrilling, fast-paced industry, ensuring vehicles can maintain their top speed and engine performance.

The Automotive and Hi-Performance Technology Program (AHP) at Automotive Training Center is designed for those who want to specialize in engine technology, getting to the root of what makes these powerful cars run the way they do. Let’s take a closer look at some of the items hi-performance mechanics are tasked with on a daily basis.

Inside Hi-Performance Engines

Hi-Performance EnginesThe goal of the Automotive and Hi-Performance Technology program is to ensure students acquire necessary technical knowledge and experience, specializing in engine technology. This includes the diagnosis, reconditioning, and preparation for assembly of engine components, including cylinder heads, camshafts, valve trains, and cylinder blocks.

Of course, there will be extensive classroom time for students, but hands-on work in the shop includes disassembly and reassembly of cylinder heads, adjusting valve spring tension, and practice with engine block boring.

Exploring What Engines Offer

With a close focus on engine exploration in this program, students will maintain optimal engine performance through routine maintenance and learn all about this piece of performance equipment. Students can go on to a career in a performance-driven field like engine building or optimizing vehicles to be raced on tracks or speedways.

Hi-performance technicians evaluate and optimize engines, in part by using a chassis dynamometer. This piece of equipment features heavy rollers locked into the floor, hooked up to diagnostic equipment. It’s designed to simulate real-life road conditions, with a series of tests conducted to measure engine output. You’ll be able to see the torque and horsepower levels and work to make adjustments and changes as needed to ensure the engine you’re working on is performing as it should.

Experience Hi-Performance Engines

Hi-Performance Engine TrainingThe Automotive and Hi-Performance program at ATC includes the study of all automobile aspects and involves three different courses dedicated to engines. The program is designed to be completed in 80 weeks, as you’ll learn about engine principles and how to maximize performance.

ASE-certified instructors will work with students on industry equipment, using engine and/or chassis dynamometers. The hands-on experience allows students to be eligible for a wide variety of entry-level positions, including automotive machinist, engine builder, or performance technician.

Are You Ready for a Career as a Hi-Performance Mechanic?

Students at ATC will have the opportunity to learn all about hi-performance engines. These engines have become more modernized over the years, with technology and electrical systems making them more powerful and capable of doing exciting things on the roadways or on the racetrack.

From the time in the classroom to the time spent in the shop using hi-performance equipment to rebuild and tune engines, students will have the opportunity to learn from ASE-certified technicians and gain the knowledge to become a hi-performance vehicle mechanic.

Scheduling a campus tour at either our Exton or Warminster locations is the best way to learn more about ATC and see if Hi-Performance Technology is a fit for your interests and aspirations. If you’ve made your decision, learn how to apply to ATC today.
